3RD EUROPEAN DRIVING LICENCE DIRECTIVE
If reading about this issue yet again causes you to lose the will to live then I understand, as at times I have been forced to sit in a darkened room and rock back and forth just to make sense of the proposals.
As we go to press the Commission has just presented the final text of the directive, as recommended by the Council of Ministers to the European Parliament and thus to what will be a full Second Reading for MEPs to vote on.
This is despite the Council of Ministers recommendation that there should not be a full Second Reading, only a rubber stamping exercise to run through the directive without questions or amendments submitted.
As suspected the final text has been put out during this recess while the Parliament is devoid of MEPs.
MAG has contacted MEPs who sit on the Transport Committee in Europe and at present we are working together on re-submitting amendments at Second Reading possibly through the Committee on Transport and Tourism (TRAN).
It’s not often that MAG asks you to stop lobbying but we have received sufficient replies from MPs and the Transport Minister to take us to the next stage.
Therefore the “Email your MP” section has been taken down for the present time as the focus moves back to Europe.
The “Lobbying your MEP” section remains but with a change on emphasis to reflect the responses already received from MEPs.
I would ask at this time NOT to lobby Conservative MEPs as we have their full support and don’t wish to clog up their mail.
However you can still sign the petition that we will present to legislators and the poll to register your view on how the directive will have a negative effect on the future of motorcycling.
The briefing document on the issue can be found at: Word Document Here and pdf Here
The campaign website on this issue can be found at Here where you can lobby your Member of the European Parliament (MEP)
The site also contains a review of the progress, pictures of the Licence Demo held in June and a licence graph which tries to make sense of the directive as it stands.
Don't forget to sign the petition
