EVSC - ISA - NO THROTTLE CONTROL - NO CONTROL
We have relaunched the 2001 MAG campaign to oppose the compulsory fitment of EVSC (External Vehicle Speed Control) or as it is now known ISA (Intelligent Speed Adaption) to privately owned vehicles of any device designed to arbitrarily remove control from the driver to remote operation.
The issue has risen specifically for riders in the light of the recent unveiling of a prototype motorcycle fitted with ISA (Intelligent Speed Adaption) technology.
I was able to ride the bike which was developed by the University of Leeds, the Department for Transport and MIRA (Motor Industry Research Association) and can state that the prototype technology is, "dangerous as it overloads the rider with information thus distracting concentration.
Furthermore the apparatus as it is at present will close the throttle mid corner where consistency of power is critical to stability."
However we must be aware of future developments that may overcome these shortcomings as the technology evolves.
MAG President Ian Mutch has been emphatic about the issue. "Let's keep this one simple, we don't want it, not today not tomorrow not ever."
Withdrawing control from the rider is fundamentally what MAG was set up to oppose.
Motorcycling is about fun and freedom and control, your hand on your throttle, your decision.
If people abuse that control and fall foul of the law then that is a different issue but when technology is deployed to directly control motorcycles then a big line is crossed and MAG knows exactly which side of that line it stands on.
This is ultimately a philosophic issue, it’s not just about safety, it’s about what sort of society we want to live in.
We don’t want to live in a society with the level of control which ISA can make possible and we intend to get more votes for our point of view than the safety zealots get for theirs.
If you agree with MAGs stance please sign the Mulhouse Declaration on the dedicated campaign website at http://tinyurl.com/e5jgt
There is also further back ground information on EVSC/ISA on the website.
The Mulhouse Declaration
“We the undersigned utterly oppose the compulsory fitment to privately owned vehicles of any device designed to arbitrarily remove control from the driver to remote operation.
We note with extreme concern the tendency of governments to impose ever more intrusive and restrictive regulations upon the citizen.
We caution governments to remember that they are permitted to govern only by the consent of the people and that such consent when given through an election does not grant unlimited licence to interfere in the daily life of the citizen.
We further caution all governments that to impose unduly on popular freedom is to imperil the respect in which government and the rule of law is held.”
