BID TO MAKE YOUNGSTERS BETTER ROAD USERS
THE Motor Cycle Industry Association (MCI) and charity, UK Youth, are holding a conference at a leading Midlands venue on how teenagers can become responsible motorists and riders. The seminar called ‘Better Riders and Drivers for Tomorrow’ will be staged during The International Motorcycle and Scooter Show at the National Exhibition Centre (NEC) in Birmingham on Thursday, November 15. MCI event co-ordinator Jill Carr explained the value of the conference which will be attended by a host of agencies including schools, the probation service and road safety officers. She said: “Whether young people opt for a car or a motorcycle as their first choice of motor vehicle, the message remains the same. They will all become road users and will need to learn about road safety and motoring issues. “We want to talk to youngsters before they actually pass their test so that they can comprehend the gravity of the motoring before they start using roads.” Guest speakers at the conference include Cathal McKeever, senior road safety education officer for the Department of the Environment for Northern Ireland and Geoffrey Underwood who works in the Accident Research Unit at Nottingham University’s School of Psychology. Mr McKeever introduced the GCSE in Road User Studies in schools in Northern Ireland and Mr Underwood has carried out studies and written papers on novice drivers. Registration for the conference costs £55. For more information on the event contact Jill Carr and Anna Rogers on 02476 250 809. |
