Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety - Manual for Streets - IHT Collision Avoidance Guidelines - Highway Code

Manual for Streets

The Manual for Streets was launched on 29 March.

It is the new guidance for designing residential and lightly trafficked streets and replaces "Design Bulletin 32" and "Places, Streets and Movement".

It emphasises the 'place' function of streets, rather than focussing solely on their 'movement' function and gives a high priority to the needs of pedestrians, cyclists and public transport users.

At the launch, hosted by the IHT, a theme of many speakers' presentations was the need to carefully consider the characteristics of the local area and apply the guidance sensitively.

Involving the relevant stakeholders early was also raised, to ensure streets meet all users' needs and will be adopted when schemes are completed.

IHT Collision Avoidance Guidelines

The IHT are due to publish their new guidelines for casualty reduction entitled "Collision, Prevention and Reduction" this summer.

This will provide important help and guidance for local authorities and those involved in casualty reduction.

A structured response to cutting collisions will help us to do more to cut the number of deaths and injuries on our roads.

These guidelines, revised and updated, will help to show how to develop such an approach.

Information on the launch conference, likely to take place in July, will appear on the IHT website: www.iht.org

REVISED HIGHWAY CODE

The Minister Stephen Ladyman announced the release of the draft revised Highway Code.

The Government's response to the consultation submissions is available from the Driving Standards Agency's website (top right corner of the page).

The new Highway Code is due for publication in summer.
