REP NEEDED IN DERBYSHIRE
Back from a very productive meeting in with Derbyshire County council who are planning their casualty reduction strategy for 2007, in particular in relation to motorcyclists.
It was a very positive meeting and I was able to steer them away from the traditional 'hit the biker' hard tactics.
Establishing instead the tried and tested 3 E's route,
Engineering - review of roadside furniture, signage, road condition etc
Education - very proactive programme of leaflets, routes with high casualty rates etc.
They also want to run a bike event/show along the lines of Bikewise in County Durham which can only be a good thing.
Somewhat disappointed that Derbyshire Constabulary do not appear to be embracing Bike Safe! (action for campaigns manager to take up with CC Derbyshire and DCC
Humberside who holds the Bike Safe portfolio for ACPO).
Enforcement - I outlined the agreed ACPO enforcement policy, ( which they didn't know about!) which avoids the mass stop checks and takes a more pragmatic view on small plates and race cans.
They have also agreed to establish a motorcyclists forum in order to consult on policy issues affecting motorcyclists.
There were two reps there from BMF, (both with, I have to say, negative views)
My question is do we have any reps in Derbyshire area who could get involved?
Derbyshire are making all the right noises and need encouragement but we need someone in there at the table.
I can get there from home, round trip of 200 miles but clearly can’t do it for the whole country and don’t want to create any precedents and tread on the toes of regional reps.
Another Good day for MAG!
