DARLING COMMENTS ON UK ROAD PRICING

Secretary of State for Transport, Alistair Darling, has outlined the role of road pricing in helping to manage demand on the UK road network.

Speaking at the launch of new DfT data about congestion on motorways and trunk roads, he said that government is pressing ahead with a major road pricing pilot in the next 4-5 years.

As a first step, and as part of the Transport Innovation Funds, government has provided £18 million for local authorities to develop demand management schemes.

The DfT congestion data showed that the average vehicle delay on the slowest 10 per cent of journeys was 3.5 minutes per 10 vehicle miles travelled.

However, nine out of ten journeys were quicker than in the baseline period of 2004-05.
