HELICOPTERS READY TO SWOOP ON CAWSTON

POLICE helicopters are on stand-by to swoop on motorbike offenders as part of a new hard-line approach on motorbike youths in Cawston.

Officers launched their campaign on the housing estate on Monday night after several complaints over the past few months about youths on motorbikes terrorising residents.

Now officers have vowed to send in more helicopters to catch the offenders and said such incidents will receive priority.

Already one helicopter has been sent out to track riders on Monday night, and arrests have been made.

But Insp. Gill Young said they will carry on until the problem is solved.

She added: "Once we get a call, we will try and get them up there straight away with a helicopter.

"What we need is names of the people straight away so we can seize their bikes from them.

"There has been a lot of trouble in Cawston with youths riding motorbikes and messing about with building site work still there."

Mike Stokes, Chairman of the Cawston Grange Community Association, welcomed the new approach after several months of pleading with the police.

By contrast in MCN there was reported:

NEW OFF-ROAD SITE TO STOP ILLEGAL RIDERS

A NEW track for mini-motorcross bikes in South Wales has been given the go-ahead -in an attempt to give young riders an alternative to illegal riding.

A 26-acre site at Sandfields near Port Talbot has been donated by a local landowner.

The track has the backing of the local authority and will be run by stunt rider Mark Thomas, who was one of the stars in the indoor stunt arena at the recent MCN London Motorcycle show.

The Fast50 site will offer riding lessons as well as engineering and mechanics courses for local children.

Thomas said: "The training courses are good fun and very useful for a lot of local kids. We are trying to offer them somewhere to ride safely that won't annoy the

local residents who are getting fed up with minimotorcross bikes being ridden illegally."

The Fast50 site will open officially in around 10 weeks.
