FEMA: Road Traffic Safety Draft Report
A new approach to motorcyclists safety
The European Parliament Transport Committee is presently discussing the Road Traffic Safety Report that would make recommendations on how to improve Road Safety to the EU Commission and the Member States.
FEMA welcomes the recommendations contained in the Draft Report, according to which "only an integrated systems approach that addresses all pillars of road safety –the driver, his vehicle and the infrastructure- can lead to significant and lasting results".
The Federation fully supports the view expressed by Rapporteur MEP Mr Vatanen that Road safety, in all three pillars in general, and Infrastructure in particular, must be thought and developed considering the needs of all road users including the more vulnerable ones, namely motorcyclists, cyclists and pedestrians.
FEMA believes that the 3rd Road Safety Action Programme could offer opportunities to achieve improvements in safety also for the users of Powered Two-Wheelers (PTWs: motorcycles and scooters), but only by using a balanced approach and appropriate statistical data.
To this end, the Federation is in contact with the EU Commission in order to identify, evaluate and discuss possible measures to improve road safety of PTWs. FEMA is also taking an active part in EU research on passive safety and on improving the quality, affordability and availability of pre-license training with EC co-funded project Initial Rider Training.
Antonio Perlot, Secretary General of FEMA, said: " FEMA welcomes the European Parliament initiative: the Federation is committed to contribute to the identification of safety solutions taking into account the specific needs of motorcycles and their users. To that end it has also devised the European Agenda for Motorcycle Safety."
