Saturday 22 July 2000 may well be the most important day for British Bikers for the next four or five years. On that day MAG aims to run a massive London demo in Trafalgar Square. The show starts at 2pm and feeder runs are being organised from all over the UK.
Why is this demo so important?
Next year is likely to be an election year, and politicians need to be reminded that motorcyclists are a political force to be reckoned with. Further, the GLA seems poised to introduce charges for motorcycles entering Central London, as well as introducing charges on bike parking. Other towns and cities are sure to follow this lead - this isn't just about London. MAG's successes have often been due to mass member action. Politicians become jaded by the large number of lobby groups arguing their various cases, but when a group is able to show that it commands mass support, our legislators tend to pay more attention.
That's why your attendance is vital.
It's apparent from our successes with the Scottish and Welsh Parliaments, recent election campaigns, such as the GLA one, and the adoption of motorcycle strategies by local authorities such as Sandwell, that politicians are starting to take our message on-board, but continued success depends on continued effort on all our parts. To make our point, we need 50,000 bikers in Trafalgar Square. And that means:
YOU
It's time to make it clear to the authorities that we're sick of bike thieves getting lighter sentences than people breaking speed limits on empty roads; Of transport policies that hike our costs and journey times while doing nothing to make our life easier or safer, or recognise the positive role motorcycles play in reducing pollution; Of law enforcement policies that seem to owe more to meeting political targets than making our roads safer, more efficient and more pleasant places; Of being blamed for the shortcomings of other road users; Of everything that makes motorcycling in this country a lot worse than it ought to be... July 22nd, Trafalgar Square, 2pm. More details of runs, meeting points and parking arrangements will be on The MAG Website |
