POLICE CRACKDOWN ON ILLEGAL NUMBER PLATES
Police in England and Wales are to start a crack down on illegal number plates in the next week in an effort to reduce the number of plates on the roads that cannot be read by speed cameras.
The move comes a week after it was revealed that speed and congestion charge cameras are unable to read many foreign number plates, or those on motorbikes.
The operation will target those who deliberately modify their number plates to avoid detection by speed cameras and congestion charge cameras.
Some road users use non-standard fonts or partially obscure characters on number plates to avoid detection.
Anyone found using such number plates is liable for a £1,000 fine, withdrawal of registration and their car declared an MOT failure.
Owners of vehicles with such number plates may be liable, even if their car was bought as such.
Stiffer penalties are being planned by the government for such cases in the future.
