Day Time Running Lights - DfT Webchat

For your information I picked this up at http://www.dftwebchat.net/ Daytime Running Lights (DRLs) for Motorcars - detrimental to motorcyclists safety?

Posted by Biker Boy on November 8th 2006

Daytime Running Lights (DRLs) for Motorcars - Will the introduction of DRLs in the UK be detrimental to motorcyclists safety.

In light of the recent TRL Report on the issues surrounding the introduction, in the UK, of Daytime Running Lights for motorcars the Ministers views as to if sees this as detrimental, or not, to motorcyclists safety would be of value.

I certainly believe so.

That's why I've been trying hard to convince my ministerial colleagues around the EU not to mandate their use - and I made a presentation to just this effect in Verona at a Road Safety ministerial conference last week.

DRLs could be of 2 types - dedicated special low-wattage lights designed for constant use or simply dipped headlights. I oppose both types in the UK especially the latter.

We commissioned a report on this subject from TRL Here that shows that the European Commission's assessment of any possible benefits are over estimated and we'll be using this report to support our case.
