July 2000 will probably turn out to be one of the most historic months in recent memory, with two events, in particular, making the news. Of course, MAG's Trafalgar Square demonstration made national coverage - remember: bikers are just loved by the media - especially when they choose to peacefully block off part of Central London to make their point!

Talking of which, as expected, Mayor Ken has finally announced his intention to introduce congestion and workplace charges in Central London - and these will include motorcycles. That is, unless we can continue to make our message clearly understood. So please ring, write, email, but whatever you do, make sure you contact Ken to politely remind him that motorcycles should be catered for, and even encouraged, if he has any foresight.

However, all is not lost! The recent West Midlands Demo attracted similar media interest and public support, but for more positive reasons.

Sandwell Council's recent Motorcycling Strategy - a first - attracted much public support from the huge variety of riders attending the council offices in a show of strength.

Lord King, leader of Sandwell Council explained how amazed he is by the massive support shown by the motorcycle community in assisting his officers in drawing up such a plan and finished by urging his colleagues in other authorities to follow suit and work more closely with riders!

So, clear messages all round this month. Riders just love to get involved with issues directly affecting them, but will not stand being undermined, or overlooked by the powers that be.

London was a reminder. Others please note!
