PARKY WHEELS HELP FIGHT AGAINST CRIME 25/07/2006

Police in Highbridge are going green in the fight against crime by becoming the first in the country to use electric mopeds.

Highbridge Community Beat Manager PC Gwilym Starks has been behind the scheme which sees him and colleagues able to get about the town on two wheels.

Local firm Knightstone Housing has sponsored one of the mopeds with Bridgwater company V&J Superbikes helping to supply kit for the machines which run entirely on electricity.

PC Starks said: "We find the mopeds are an excellent crime reduction and road safety tool as well as helping us to approach a scene or incident very quietly when necessary.

"They are also extremely economical and environmentally friendly as they have no emissions and can charge fully within three hours. "I have already found them extremely useful in policing around Highbridge during their first week of use."

US firm Electric Vehicle Transport have manufactured the mopeds which have not been used by any other force in the country.

PC Starks added: "Great thanks to the businesses who have already supported us to help get the mopeds on the road.

"We also find they are using in demonstrating the safe use of mopeds and how people can use them on the roads and not become involved in road traffic collisions.

"Ultimately, they mean myself and other officers are able to get to places we would not have been able too in a police car."
