House of Commons Order Paper - new Early Day Motion Date published: July 20 2005
MOTORCYCLE USE OF BUS LANES IN THE BOROUGH OF WESTMINSTER
MPs: Lembit Öpik, Andrew Mackinlay, Stephen Pound, Bill Wiggin, Robert Goodwill, David Drew, Bill Etherington, Bob Spink
That this House applauds Westminster City Council's proposal to allow motorcycles to use bus lanes in the City of Westminster; believes that allowing motorcycles into bus lanes is a measure which can help to improve motorcycle safety without making a negative impact on bicycle and pedestrian safety; notes that large numbers of local authorities now allow motorcycles to use bus lanes in recognition of how motorcycle use can help reduce congestion and pollution, so contributing to a better traffic environment; and calls on the Secretary of State for Transport to approve Westminster City Council's proposal to amend relevant road signs to show that motorcycles are allowed to use bus lanes in the City of Westminister.
Early Day Motions:
This is a informal term for a request, or notices of motion, by an MP in the House of Commons for a debate "on an early day" but for which no date has been fixed.
Very few are debated and it is generally used as a way for MPs to put on record their opinion on a subject and canvass support for it from fellow Members.
