DIESEL SPILLS KILL

As motorcyclists, we all know the danger of diesel spills, and the tragic death of a rider has prompted action calling for the government to deal with the problem of diesel spills.

MAG is offering its full support to a diesel spill campaign and petition and will shortly be announcing an initiative to supply hauliers with “Diesel Spill Stickers” for their lorries and diesel pumps. A sample of the sticker is pictured on this page.

Background

The CBR600.org.uk and MCNNinjas.co.uk web sites, arrange joint ride outs and track days and generally talk about biking related stuff linking up on their website forums.

There is a lot of friendly rivalry between the two sites and the bikes they ride, but at the end of the day they are all “bikers” and support one and other.

On October 18th they had a ride out to the Cat & Fiddle.

Mid morning they went their separate ways while two of the group decided to head to the Horse Shoe Pass in North Wales.

On the way back down from the Pass, Lee slid on a patch of diesel doing approx. 40mph and collided with an oncoming Ford Mondeo. Tragically Lee died instantly in the collision

Members from the club had only met each other for the first time that morning, but both the CBR and the Ninja websites felt compelled to take action against the danger of diesel spills.

Action

The campaign is in two parts:
1. A petition to the Government asking for action to be taken to prevent diesel spills
2. A campaign to educate lorry, bus and van drivers, of danger of overfilling their diesel tanks.

The petition can be found at www.petitiononline.com/ukdspill/

Petition Wording

To: Government

"We the undersigned are deeply concerned about the complete and utter lack of responsibility shown by the operators of some lorries, vans and buses in allowing diesel to be spewed over the road.

This represents a complete and utter disregard to the safety of other road users, in particular motorcyclists. Diesel left on the road is the cause of countless deaths and injuries.

The Government has set targets to reduce the number of deaths on the road; a simple modification to diesel tanks could prevent a significant number of deaths.

It is time the Government introduced legislation to combat this ever increasing danger."

Posters - Fliers
Posters, advising riders of the petition are to be displayed at bike shops, bike meets and pubs.

The support the petition has received from the biking community has been phenomenal, with over 2,500 signatures gathered within 5 days.

With regard to educating drivers, they have designed a flyer that will be e-mailed to all companies together with a copy of the poster.

A copy of the flier and poster should be included in this issue. You may be able to photo copy these and distribute them at your local dealers and petrol station.

MAG is offering full support to the campaign and asks to you to please help publicise this problem. It is time that the Government took action.
