GREETING FROM MAG's NEW ACTING CHAIR - AINE GALE
As there is much speculation out there both amongst the membership and further afield since Nicky Bassett-Powell resigned as Chairman of MAG I feel it is my duty to
tell you where I, as Acting Chairman, am coming from.
Firstly, I should like to thank Nicky for the confidence expressed in her resignation letter that I, as vice-Chairman elected
in June, can assume the Chair and take MAG forward to its AGC in the Spring.
I feel it only fair to point out that, just after last Christmas, Nicky rang me to ask if I would stand at
the AGC 2002 for the Chairmanship of MAG. This was on the recommendation of Nich Brown who knew of my work in the Region and my previous history with the Womens' International
Motorcycle Association (WIMA). I declined in 2002 for two reasons. The first being the stability of my Region given that it had suffered a period of instability some 18 months prior. The
second, being the co-ordination of the 2002 Annual Group Conference in Weston-super-Mare.
Since being elected as Vice Chairman I worked as closely as possible with Nicky on MAG
policies.
My history in MAG goes back to the time of sitting in the House of Commons listening to the Helmet Law being debated and though my membership may have lapsed given
personal circumstances at the time, I have been linked with the Organisation since 1973.
For the past 12ish years I have been working in Western at a local, county and regional
level continuously and am presently Regional Rep, together with having been elected as a member of the board of directors of MAG UK at the 2002 AGC.
My history with WIMA spans over 30
years and I first took over the Captaincy (an Americanism for Chairman!) in 1976 after receiving a desperate phone call informing me our Captain had fled. I took over as requested, as an
interim. This 'interim' role lasted approximately 7.5 years when I chose to step down having completed all I had set out to do for the Association of which I am now an Honorary Life
Member.
My aspirations for the Motorcycle Action Group are quite simple.
MAG needs a period of stability with no previous baggage and no perceived conflicts of interest. The
Riders Rights Movement must move forward and MAG is that movement. With a strong National Committee including Officers and Regional Reps together with dedicated staff at MAG Central Office -
all whose aspirations match my own - I shall do my best to take MAG forward for the benefit of its members and motorcycling per se.
MAG's only bedfellows must be its members.
However, we must build bridges where they are needed; work with any and all parties in our fight against restrictive, unnecessary legislation and make MAG greater than it has ever been.
There is much work to be done both inside and outside the Organisation. This will not be achieved over night and I ask for the support of our Members to help the NC, senior Staff and
myself progress MAG forward.
