Dark Visors Public Consultation
The Motorcycle Action Group welcomes the promise kept by the government for public consultation on the future of motorcyclists' visors.
The consultation follows the controversial findings of the published research completed last year for the DTLR by the Institute of Consumer Ergonomics (ICE Ergonomics Ltd) which looked at
the benefits and disadvantages of darker visors.
Following the successful MAG Action Document on the VED public consultation MAG will be producing a similar action document giving relevant guidelines for riders to respond to the Dark
Visor consultation.
MAG's Director of Public Affairs, Trevor Baird said, "In the real world, sudden and unexpected glare can give riders a problem. Dark visors reduce eye strain in this circumstance,
enabling riders to look longer and more carefully for potential hazards."
MAG realises this is a highly emotive subject but riders have until the 14th June to respond. The consultation document is considering three options on Dark Visors. One to maintain the
present minimum light transmission. Two to accept a slightly lower light transmission as recommended by the research and Three to allow dark visors that are in use at present which have a minimum light transmission
of 18%. This option is supported by most members of the British Standard Institute Committee and would bring visors into line with the current permitted light transmittance for motorcyclists' goggles.
Details of the action document will be posted on the MAG web site at www.mag-uk.org . Details of the consultation are at http://www.roads.dtlr.gov.uk/consult/visors/index.htm
Note: Unlike the VED consultation there is no electronic form to fill in you will need to print the documents out. To be returned to Ms B Natarajan, Department for Transport, Local
Government and the Regions, Zone2/04, Great Minster House, 76 Marsham Street, London, SW1P 4DR.
