MAG Welcomes New DTLR Guidance on Motorcycle Parking
Issued 3rd May 2002
The Motorcycle Action Group, the UK's leading riders' organisation, welcomes the recent Department of Transport, Local Government and the Regions' Guidance Leaflet on Motorcycle Parking.
Under the Transport Act 2000 and the Transport (Scotland) Act 2001 local authorities have been given powers to install equipment for motorcycle parking on roads or elsewhere.
The leaflet complements those powers in providing advice about how facilities can be provided. It includes advice on site selection, justification, security, funding, consultation,
design, implementation and monitoring, drawing on examples from around the country.
Transport Minister David Jamieson, commented, "This will help the increasing number of motorcyclists to find suitable space to park, reduce the problem of riders parking
inappropriately, such as on pavements where they affect other road users, and most importantly, reduce the high level of motorcycle theft."
With a network of nearly two hundred local groups MAG activists are perfectly positioned to contact their local councils, asking them to read the leaflet, to provide the secure parking
that motorcyclists require. To help our activists in this, MAG has published its own leaflet and sent out an Action Document, which is available at: http://www.mag-uk.org/act/2-may-2002.html
MAG's Director of Public Affairs, Trevor Baird, said,"MAG awarded Biker Friendly status to Sandwell, Reading and Rugby and Test Valley local authority at the Annual Group Conference
in April this year. Hopefully this will be the start of a long list of councils and authorities that recognise and take action of riders needs".
