STOLEN BIKE
Are professional bike thieves active again in Bedfordshire?
The Metropolitan Police Vehicle Crime Unit conviction of a £2m ring of thieves based in Dunstable was a huge
success but a R1 stolen in Dunstable seems to have been lifted by professionals.
The theft of the R1 was witnessed and reported on the 999 system informing the police of a theft in progress. The
witness was told that until the registered keeper reported the crime, that they could not dispatch an officer to attend the crime in progress. Dunstable police station is approx. ¼ mile away from the
scene of the crime. Council maintained CCTV cameras also operate in the Leisure centre car park; the thieves do not seem to have been deterred by this in the least!
The multiple eye-witnesses reported the theft on, Thursday 9th January 2003 at 6pm.

R1 owner Dominic says, "I was shocked to read the MAG's press release regarding the previous gang who seemed to be based in Dunstable, and I can't help but
speculate on any relationship between those convicted of the previous offences, and this incident. I hope that this info may possibly prove useful to somebody somewhere. They would appear to be a
professional gang, who show no hesitation to removing a bike in front of multiple witnesses, and they are capable of doing this in less than 30 seconds. I would advise nobody to leave his or her
motorcycle unattended in the Dunstable area. I will be contacting Hampshire's Stolen Vehicle Squad and the Met's Stolen Vehicle Unit directly, as I have little confidence in the information I
provided local police being efficiently circulated."
