LEG PROTECTORS MAG FORGOTTEN

*Stop Press Bike Magazine have responded to letters and printed a “Shame on us” response in Bike

There seems to be a plan afoot in EMAP to rob MAG of the credit for everything we do or have ever done.

The latest outrage from Peterborough is priceless.

They have managed to run a four page feature on the leg protector issue and the campaigns of 1988 without mentioning MAG once.

MAG were the main movers on this one.

We lobbied, we ran postcard campaigns, we held meetings with Peter Bottomley the Roads Minister and went to the Transport Research Laboratory to see the things for ourselves.

I personally met Dr Brian Chin and so I knew what I was talking about when I wrote stuff about leg protectors.

The jewel in the crown of our campaign however was the Riders Rights Day.

MAG's idea 100% and while we were glad that the BMF plus every man and his dog decided to support it, make no mistake this was our show.

Riders Rights Day resulted in Central London around Park Lane grinding to a halt as 25,000 riders crammed into the area.

We got prime time TV coverage and Peter Bottomley backpeddled smartly right afterwards by saying that he just thought leg protectors should be fitted by manufacturers as an option.

The whole idea of compulsion faded away.

Now Bike tries to rob us of one of our major victories. Please write in your own words and tell them what you think.

As always keep it polite and if possible a bit humorous.

Make no mistake though, these people are way out of order and they need to be told.

If you can get a copy of the magazine and make reference to some of the comments in it then so much the better.

It's on pages 14-17 of the February issue.

We want to have a good relationship with the bike press but when they do something like this we have to shout.
