THE LOCAL GROUP EXPANSION PLAN 2004 by Neil Liversidge

This is not a guide to lobbying MPs or Councillors. It is not a briefing on the many different issues that motorcyclists face. It is not intended to be.

For MAG to campaign effectively we need a mass membership organised through local groups.

To use a naval analogy, before a warship can fire a shot in anger it has to be designed, built, provisioned, armed fuelled and crewed. Only when all this has been done, and the crew have worked the ship up to the required level of operating efficiency, can it start out on the purpose for which it was created.

So it is with MAG. For MAG to be an effective political lobbying force it needs to be stable, to have a well-led, high, motivated membership and to be properly financed.

Local MAG branches are the single most crucial element in the achievement of MAG's required state of operating efficiency. As the recruiting and training ground for the Members and Officers of tomorrow they are also the effective guarantor of MAG's future.

The Local Group Expansion Plan 2004 - LGEP - aims to strengthen existing branches and to help would-be new Reps launch new branches where none currently exist. We recognise that Local Branch Reps and officers are the backbone of MAG to whom we owe you all the
support, help and commitment that we can possible give.

This guide is a starting point. It is not the be-all and end-all and is not inflexible.

You are a volunteer, not an employee.

That said, all these ideas have been tried, tested and proven to work.

If you wonder why there are so many references to Wakefield & District MAG as you read through the answer is simple - Wakefield MAG was created to test the theories I had worked out over many years spent noting the reasons why some MAG branches succeed and others fail. All these theories were put into practice in Wakefield.

This is a summary of what worked, what didn't, and why.

The aim of this guide then is to help you get the most out of your efforts and to avoid some of the pitfalls that others have discovered before you.

Follow the plan and you will be a very successful MAG Rep. You don't need to be Superman or Wonderwoman but you will need to have real commitment, to be prepared to stick at it and not be easily discouraged.

You also need to be sincere and have genuine good will towards the Members and potential Members of your branch. To recruit other branch officers you will need to learn to be cautious and trusting in the right measures.

You also need to be prepared to examine the way you operate now if you are already running a branch, and if necessary, be prepared to change.

Additional Help

This guide is intended as a practical document and if you read it thoroughly - and then re-read it as necessary - it should help you a lot.

Do not get the idea though that this is where the help ends. It doesn't.

We are not cutting you loose to sink or swim. If you need help with posters, leaflets, press releases or anything else, just ask.

Your Regional Rep's will provide all the help they can and so will I.

Neil F. Liversidge,

MAG Director and Founding Rep, Wakefield Branch, 2002/03.
