The Federation of European Motorcyclists Associations (FEMA) will be making a presentation to the United Nations' Road Safety Committee on the hazards that road signs
and markings can create particularly for motorcyclists.
FEMA highlighted to the committee that there is no recognition of road signs and markings creating hazards, particularly
for motorcyclists.
To illustrate the presentation with real examples FEMA have requested if you have or can get photographs (preferably digital) of:
1: Examples of signs sited so that
they obscure the view of the driver/rider wishing to join the major road and/or the driver rider on the major road not seeing a vehicle waiting to join the road. An ideal example would show a
"now you don't see the bike, now you do" sequence.
2: Examples of unnecessary markings through a curve or in an area where a motorcycle would be expected to brake (for example coming
up to a junction). 3: Examples of road markings where the marking is higher than the surface of the road or where the marking is breaking up.
4: Examples of signs sited on bends where
a motorcyclist losing control would be injured when hitting the signs or the poles on which they were mounted (for example the series of arrows or chevrons that show where the road is going).
5:
Examples of accidents date, age/experience of rider, size of bike and speed would be helpful.
Some of the above may require some effort but it is extremely important as it offers the first chance
to get issues such as the dangers poorly sited signs can create, recognised within the regulations.
