Dear All,

Well what a month March has been! At last we wave farewell to the discriminatory one-year ban, see some positive changes to the UK licensing regime, the prospect of raised standards for car driver training in the form of hazard perception testing, and no increase, for the second year running, to the cost of the Road Fund License. And all set against a climate of massively increased new machine sales! After months of debate and lobbying the long awaited road safety and speed strategies arrived with a lower profile than expected, not because they lack policies, but because they finally acknowledge that motorcycles exist and give little cause for us to fight, but to continue to negotiate sensibly. The safety strategy, partly reproduced within this issue, actually includes an entire chapter on motorcycling - not trying to reduce us in numbers, as would previously have been the case, but recognising that the travelling public are choosing mopeds and motorcycles in ever increasing numbers and actually catering for their needs. Similarly, small chinks of light are starting to appear from the Home Office with a renewed commitment to tackle motorcycle theft, and finally, every single UK police force has adopted Bikesafe 2000 and will be organising rider-supportive initiatives, in conjunction with MAG activists in many areas. If you are not already on board with your local police scheme, let us know and we will put you in touch.

Phil

NB: Please note we have a new Reps Liaison Officer, Nicky Myakicheff. All reps liaison business is now dealt with from Central Office.
